Galaro

It is the old village of Megalo Galaro, built at the foot of Mount Ethera. It is one of the most representative villages of Riza with 245 inhabitants. An important historical monument, not only of the region but also of the whole island, is the – even if it is in ruins – old settlement of Galaro, which was destroyed in the earthquakes of 1953 and abandoned.

In Galaro, you should visit the Church of Agios Ioannis the Forerunner, which is a 16th century church and was restored after the 1953 earthquakes. The current church is the parish church of Galaro and has remarkable works of art inside. It has a nice stone bell tower.
